Got a question about our short language courses? Find the answer here. Who can study language courses at the Centre for Open Learning? Everyone over the minimum age requirement of 16! Our language courses are open to all. How is my language course taught? All classes are taught in person and on campus, with the exception of some Gaelic courses. How do I enrol on a language course? You can enrol on one of our language course through our online booking system. Simply choose a language from our list and decide on a level using our self-assessment information available on each language page, then use our website to book your place! Which language level is right for me? You can find some helpful language level self assessment guidance on each of our specific language pages. Do I need to provide a language certificate to prove my current ability? No, we do not require you to provide any proof of your language skills. Can I earn Credits on languages courses? Short courses in languages are not-for-credit courses. We offer a selection of credit courses in languages for matriculated students of the University of Edinburgh - more info. Can I change my course if I choose the wrong language level? If you think your language course is not at the right level for you, you should discuss this with the teacher after your first class. Once you have agreed on the more appropriate language level, your teacher will request a transfer for you. Please note that transfer requests must be received before the third session. Will I be automatically enrolled on the progression level of course? No, you must enrol for each course individually. We strongly encourage you to book future courses 8 days before the start date of your progression course, as enrolment for courses is not automatic. I'm not able to attend my language class this week - can I attend another session instead? Unfortunately not, you can only attend the class for which you have enrolled. Is there an exam at the end of the course and will I receive a certificate of completion? There are no exams for our language courses. Our courses do not lead to a language qualification and no certificates are issued upon completion of the course. However, students who have attended at least 8 out of 10 classes of a course can request a letter of attendance from our Registration team.
