Spanish Language Proficiency Test

SIELE is a comprehensive, computer-based exam that evaluates Spanish proficiency across four key areas: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression and interaction, and oral expression and interaction.

The assessment aligns with the proficiency levels outlined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), as established by the European Council.

This framework ensures a standardized and internationally recognized measurement of Spanish language skills.

SIELE is suitable for all individuals aged 16 and over, who want to assess or need to demonstrate their proficiency in Spanish, whether as their native language or as an additional language. This exam is especially useful for those who require a quick certification for university enrolment or job applications.

SIELE is a single multilevel exam that allows you to obtain the SIELE certificate, a document that includes a score from 0 to 1000, the result of the sum of your scores from each of the four tests.

SIELE provides candidates with various independent tests (also known as independent modalities) to suit their language proficiency needs.

These tests include the comprehensive SIELE Global test, which evaluates proficiency across all language domains—reading comprehension, listening comprehension, writing, and speaking—in a single examination. 

Additionally, SIELE offers 5 independent tests (independent modalities), ​affording test-takers the flexibility to choose and focus on specific language skills, such as reading and listening comprehension, writing, or speaking, based on their individual goals and requirements. To secure a spot for taking the SIELE Global on any of the available dates at the University (check the top of this page), please visit the official SIELE website and follow the steps to create your registration account. Should you prefer independent modalities or need specific information concerning them, please do not hesitate to contact us at siele@ed.ac.uk.

Your results will be available within a maximum of 3 weeks. Once they are ready, you will receive an email notification with instructions to access and download your certificate or report from the official SIELE website.

After completing the SIELE Global exam, you will receive an internationally recognized certificate valid for five years. Similarly, upon finishing any of the SIELE Independent Modalities, you will obtain a report with a five-year validity.

To request special testing accommodations for your SIELE exam, please contact the SIELE customer support team directly. Explain your need for special accommodations and inquire about the specific process for requesting them. You may be required to submit documentation that verifies your need for accommodations, such as medical records, a letter from a healthcare provider, or other relevant documents. SIELE will work with you to ensure that the accommodations are appropriate and fair.

Please, make sure to request accommodations well in advance of your planned exam date. SIELE may have specific deadlines for accommodation requests, so remember to inquire about this during your initial contact. Additionally, we recommend keeping the SIELE Coordinator informed about your accommodation request at siele@ed.ac.uk.

The SIELE Global exam follows a predetermined sequence of tests (Reading Comprehension, Listening Comprehension, Written Expression and Interaction, and Spoken Expression and Interaction).

The total duration of the exam is 3 hours, and there is an additional 15-minute break following the Listening Comprehension part.

Currently, the cost of the SIELE Global exam is 165 euros.

If you are taking Spanish classes with us and wish to assess your Spanish proficiency, the SIELE Global exam is an excellent choice. It offers a comprehensive evaluation of your skills and places you on the CEFR proficiency scale, ranging from level A1 to C1, without a pass/fail outcome. Additionally, if you prefer to assess specific language skills separately, SIELE's independent modalities provide the same outcome while evaluating each skill individually.
