Unsung Heroes of European Cinema

Join teacher Rolland Man on this 10-week exploration of hidden cinema gems.

Do you love European cinema but would like to study more than textbook classics? Tired of watching and discussing the same cinematic canon over and over?

Would you like to discover some amazing (and often overlooked!) film gems, made by talented directors who somehow – often for obscure reasons – did not make it into the mainstream cinema history books? Maybe Unsung Heroes of European Cinema is the course for you.

My name is Rolland Man and I would like to welcome you to a 10-week class in which we can share our passion for forgotten gems. Feel free to question the cannon!

This year the list of neglected filmmakers includes great pioneers of cinema, such as Germaine Dulac – a feminist trailblazer whose innovations and imagination inspired and influenced generations, but who is a lot less discussed than her male colleagues. Or Mikhail Kalatozov, whose works feature a free, fluid camera at a time when his most successful colleagues were obsessed with editing techniques.

We will also discuss other independent, unconventional creators whose work did not align with the dominant aesthetics or ideologies of their times, such as Helmut Käutner, Antonio Pietrangeli or Juan Antonio Bardem. And we explore the distinctive and fascinating universes of original creators such as Nikos Koundouros, Mai Zetterling, Wojciech Has and André Delvaux.
