Swahili Level Self-assessment

If you feel that you can talk reasonably well about most of the following topics, you are at a suitable level to enrol for Swahili Beginners 2. 

Can you 

• Introduce yourself to someone and give some basic information about yourself (name, origin, which languages you speak)
• Ask someone for the same kind of information
• Talk with someone about your respective plans for the week/ weekend
• Tell someone what you did yesterday/ past week or weekend

Would you be able to communicate with a Swahili speaker who asked you these questions?

• Unatoka wapi?
• Unaongea lugha gani?
• Wikendi utafanya nini? Utaenda wapi?
• Jana ulifanya nini?

If you feel that you could cope reasonably well with most of the following topics, you are at a suitable level to enrol for Swahili Beginners 3. 

Can you 

• Hold a short conversation about daily routines/ plans for the week/end
• Tell the date and talk about birthdays
• Talk about your family (members and relations, age)
• Give/request phone numbers

Would you be able to communicate with a Swahili speaker who asked you these questions?

• Mwaka jana ulifanya nini?
• Leo ni tarehe gani?
• Una miaka mingapi?
• Una dada au kaka? Wanaitwa nani? Wana miaka mingapi?

If you feel that you could cope reasonably well with the following topics, you are at a suitable level to enrol for Swahili Elementary 1. 

Can you 

• Tell the time
• Ask for/ give directions
• Describe your city
• Buy fruits and vegetable at the market

Would you be able to communicate with a Swahili speaker who asked you these questions?

• Unajua njia ya kuenda stesheni?
• Nyumba yako iko wapi?
• Chuo Kikuu cha Edinburgh kiko wapi?
• Unapenda kula matunda na mboga gani?

If you feel that you could cope reasonably well with the following topics, you are at a suitable level to enrol for Swahili Elementary 2. 

Can you 

• Order food in a restaurant
• Talk about what you usually wear/ what people around you are wearing (items of clothing, colours)
• Describe your room/ house
• Discuss the weather
• Describe people (appearance and character) 

Would you be able to communicate with a Swahili speaker who asked you these questions? 

• Mgahawani: Ungependa kula nini?
• Unapenda kuvaa nguo za rangi gani?
• Kwenye chumba chako kuna nini?
• Hali ya hewa ya leo ni gani?
• Eleza tabia na sifa za familia na rafiki zao?

If you feel that you could cope reasonably well with the following topics, you are at a suitable level to enrol for Swahili Elementary 3. 

Can you 

• Hold a basic conversation with a doctor about your health
• Talk about holidays and travels
• Retell a short anecdote
• Describe a dish you like to cook

Would you be able to communicate with a Swahili speaker who asked you these questions?

• Unasikia vipi sasa hivi? Umefurahi? Umechoka?
• Ulienda Afrika Mashariki? Ulisafiri vipi? Uliona nini?

• Discuss abstract notions
• Use Swahili when looking for things on the internet
• Read article newspapers and discuss topics of interest

• Kusoma lugha mpya kuna hasara na faida gani?
• Unafikiri upendo ni muhimu kwenye familia?
• Unatumia mitandao ya kijamii?
• Unapenda kusoma gazeti gani? Ulisoma habari gani leo?

If you feel that you could cope reasonably well with most of the following topics, you are at a suitable level to enrol for Swahili Elementary 5. 

Can you 

• Describe your job/ employment situations?
• Talk about relationships in families/ friendships
• Describe household objects and their purpose
• Cope with basic Swahili proverbs

Would you be able to communicate with a Swahili speaker who asked you these questions? 

• Unafanya kazi/shughuli gani? Unaajiriwa na nani?
• Kwa kawaida dada na kaka wanagombana au wanapendana?
• Kusafisha nyumba unatumia vitu gani?
• Methali ni nini? Unajua mfano mmoja?

Can you 

• Discuss hypothetical situations
• Read basic news headlines
• Debate and make arguments 

Would you be able to communicate with a Swahili speaker who asked you these questions? 

• Ukisafiri Kenya na Tanzania utaenda wapi?
• Ungeshinda pesa nyingi, ungefanya nini?
• Leo umesoma habari gani kwenye magazeti?
• Ni muhimu kusoma lugha tofauti ? Toa maoni yako na sababu tatu kueleza maoni yako vizuri.
