Book Week Scotland Event - Adventures in Reading

Join us for a COL event to celebrate Book Week Scotland this November.

Book Week Scotland is an annual celebration of books and reading that takes place across the country.  Book Week Scotland 2023 will take place 13–19 November and is supported by Creative Scotland and SLIC.

The Centre for Open Learning (COL) is delighted to get involved and help celebrate this important day with a guided discussion from our Creative Writing and Literature Teaching Fellows.

Adventures in Reading - guided discussion of what 'adventure' might mean in literary texts

Poet Emily Dickinson wrote, “There is no Frigate like a Book / To take us Lands away.” Can reading itself be an adventure? When we open a book, there’s no telling where imagination—the author’s and our own—may take us, what new worlds of fact or feeling we might discover. This event will take the idea of ‘adventure’ beyond tales of travel to faraway lands or quests to find lost treasure, to explore imaginative adventure, and reading itself as an adventure. We’ll look at a selection of short texts and discuss what ‘adventure’ means to us.

Come along to join the discussion. No prior knowledge needed.
